October is an awesome month for us here at Fit Club NY. Not only do we promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month as well. These two important causes complement each other, emphasizing the crucial role that physical therapy can play in the lives of our patients who suffer from breast cancer.
For many of our patients, the road to recovery after breast cancer doesn’t end when chemotherapy/surgery is over. It’s where another phase of the recovery process begins. Physical therapy is often a key part of that journey, helping patients regain strength, mobility, and stability, and making our patients who suffer feel a sense of normalcy. Our mission here at Fit Club is to heal our patients, before, during, and after surgery we stick with our patients to ensure the injuries do not reoccur.
How Physical Therapy Will Enhance Breast Cancer Recovery
Breast cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can leave patients with physical difficulties that may appear long after the cancer is gone. These challenges often include:
•Reduced Range of Motion: Surgery, especially mastectomies or lumpectomies, can result in scar tissue that could limit movement in arms and shoulders.
• Lymphedema: The removal of lymph nodes can cause swelling, which tends to be a common side effect of breast cancer surgery.
•Fatigue and Weakness: Many patients experience significant muscle weakness & fatigue due to both the treatment and the cancer.
• Pain: Chronic pain in the arms, shoulders, and chest is common after radiation or surgery
Here at Fit Club, we address these issues through a carefully designed rehabilitation plan that focuses on:
• Restoring Mobility: Tailor-made exercise and stretching plans to help improve flexibility and reduce stiffness caused by radiation or surgery.
• Strengthening Muscles: A progressive strength-training schedule helps patients regain lost muscle strength and endurance.
• Managing Lymphedema: Specialized techniques, including compression therapy and lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling and discomfort associated with lymphedema.
• Pain Reduction: Therapeutic methods like soft tissue mobilization, manual therapy, and gentle exercises can improve function and alleviate pain.
At Fit Club, we take a personalized approach to physical therapy, tailoring treatment to meet the different needs of each patient. One of our success stories that we are proudest of comes from a patient who was relentless and brave. This patient fought and beat breast cancer. Throughout her recovery process, we were there to support her every step of the way, helping her regain mobility and strength through an empowering and intense tailor-made rehabilitation process. We worked as a team understanding her goals and what kind of life she wanted to return to. Today, she’s living an active life, thanks to her determination to beat the cancer!
Why National Physical Therapy Month Matters
National Physical Therapy Month is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of physical therapy as a vital healthcare profession. For our breast cancer patients, Fit Club does more than just treat physical symptoms. We also help:
• Boosting Confidence: Fighting for control of your body, which can have a strong effect on emotional and mental wellness.
• Empowering Patients: With assistance from our skilled physical therapist, Fit Club patients learn techniques, exercises, and stretches, equipping our patients with the tools they need they need to stay on the path to recovery.
• Improving Quality of Life: Here at Fit Club, we address pain, fatigue, and mobility issues. Which helps our patients get back to doing the things they love.
